Hello and welcome to one of hopefully many long lasting series on NES!
One of the greatest things about video games is the vast variety of music found therein.
The most memorable tunes and sounds stay with us even after decades of completing a game and allow us to relive the most enjoyable moments. Music can incite many different emotions including happiness, fear, tension and confidence and allow us to immerse ourselves in the experience even further.
In this particular series I would like to take you on a journey through time – to discover and rediscover not only the most memorable tracks but also obscure gems that many might have never heard of.
Without further ado, I would like to kick it off with a personal favorite. A powerful track composed by Kenichi Matsubara for the 1987 classic Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest on the NES.
Castlevania II was one of multiple sequels on the NES that strongly deviated from their predecessors. Zelda II, Fire Emblem Gaiden and Final Fantasy II are further examples.
Nevertheless, Castlevania II has left a strong legacy in its trail and what used to be a simple overworld theme has been remixed many times in future installments – proving to any doubtful mind that Simon’s Quest has left its mark on the history of the franchise.
Before you delve into the following fine tracks let me thank you for reading this first installment. This is a community effort and your suggestions are not only welcome but encouraged!
